Welcome to the ineedhits Search Engine Marketing blog, where we share the latest search engine and online marketing news, releases, industry trends and great DIY tips and advice.
Hi ineedhits,
I’m new to website marketing so you will have to forgive me. I have just launched my very first website for my wood carving business and have been told I really need to “optimize” my site so that it gets found in Google. Been doing some reading but I am confused, what are ALT tags and Meta tags? Should they be on my site?
Thanks in advance
Dave Fraser, Oregon, USA
Hi Dave,
Congratulations on your new website and don’t worry we all have to start sometime in search engine marketing – welcome aboard.
Meta tags are bits of text placed with the HTML code of your website, but are not displayed on the website.
Search engines use these tags for the sole purpose of indexing and cataloging your website. The meta tags are always found between the <head> and </head> tags.
ALT tags are alternative text that can be displayed instead of an image if a visitor to your website cannot view the images in their browser.
Generally, ALT tags look like this:
< img src=”/images/ineedhits.gif” alt=”ineedhits.com: Professional Search Engine Marketing Company” />
You should always use ALT tags especially if your website contains lots of photos or graphic-image maps at the top of your home page. The reason for this is that some search engines will take this alternative text into account when they rank your website.
Hope this helps!

I have a brand new website and haven’t launched it yet because I hear I should advertise on it first. How do I do any of that, including alt tags?
How do I get involved with keyword searching?
Oh, so much to learn!
