Google have announced that they will start recgonising images within XML sitemaps which have been submitted for your website. The change will allow owners of image heavy websites to ensure Google is indexing these files for inclusion in image based search results.
For each URL on your sitemap you can list up to 1,000 images and include information on:
Google’s webmaster help page provides more information on how to implement the image tags, but I have also included a short example below.
Submitting images via your sitemap can be useful in helping Google find files that may be hidden behind JavaScript forms and is general good practise to ensure you’re getting as much information indexed as possible.
