Google celebrity Matt Cutts has weighed in on the use of Geo Meta tags, saying that they don’t account for much when it comes to SEO. Matt posted a video discussing the topic as part of the Google Webmaster Central YouTube channel.
Geo Meta tags are regular meta tag elements that can provide information on your website’s location and country. Matt says that Google doesn’t give them much weight at all when it comes to assigning a country association to your website.
You can watch Matt’s response below:
As Matt says in the video, there are other elements Google can use to determine your country association including your IP address, Top-level domain and association in Google webmaster tools.
Another handy hint is that if you have different content (on subdomains for example), you can specify each of these in Google webmaster tools to give them country associations. This can be handy if your site’s available in multiple languages for example.
