Custom vs. Free Website Design – Which is Best?

Posted by @ 6:06 pm

Your website is the most important part of your online marketing efforts. Without it potential customers will find it quite difficult to know what products/services you business has to offer.

While having a website for your business is the first step, you need to ensure it is a good website also. Here’s why:

  • It is the first impression potential customers get of your business and its brand
  • It will impact your SEO efforts – both on and off site

So the question is, “Do I have to pay through the roof in order to get a well designed website?”

Not necessarily, there are thousands of free website templates available for you to choose when building your site. However, if you have the money to spend on a custom template, this might be worth your while.

Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each:

Just like any aspect of you business, you need to weigh up the pros and cons of each website design option. Budget will be your main factor, but make sure you don’t sacrifice your companies brand in the process.

interesting article, but it misses one BIG category – custom websites with a CMS (content management system). Any decent custom website should have a CMS built in.

By creating a custom site you also avoid another pitfall. distracting yourself from running your business by learning web design and devoting countless hours to it in the process.ours better spent generating business or filling orders. Also with a database driven site powered by software like Joomla or Drupal your web person can set it up so you can make changes through a WYSIWYG interface (similar to Word) The cost of these systems has dropped dramatically, they can be template designed or customized and offer the value of accessibility to make your own changes. NOTE: There are some unscrupulous web design firms that “Rent” you a website which includes a ton of functionality at an incredibly low price. Once you leave them however they pull the website and you are left with an empty URL and no hosting.

The biggest thing to consider is cost. If you are just starting out, it may make sense to start with a free template. However, as a business grows it will need an original design. Free templates are pretty easy to spot and it’s hard to take a business seriously that uses one.
