Did you know that 25% of the American population access the Internet ONLY through their mobile device? This is a quite astounding statistic and it got me wondering how many of our readers have a mobile version of their website. If not, there is a big sector of people your website just isn’t reaching.
So, do you have a mobile version of your website? I would love for you to quickly take the poll below.
For those that don’t have a mobile version of their website, it’s about time you got started and I have some tools to help.
I have outlined below my pick of the top testing tools that will help you develop your mobile website:
A free tool which simply shows you how your website will currently display on iPhones or other devices a with 320 by 480-pixel canvas.
2. W3C mobileOK Checker
This tool performs various tests on a web page and confirms if your website is “mobileOK”. If its not then it provides specific details on changes you need to make to your site including step-by-step tutorials.
3. Mobile Readiness Test
This test evaluates how well your site performs on mobile devices and provides a score from 1 to 5 based on 30 mobile web development best practices.
For those that have a WordPress site, this plugin will help your site become more mobile-enabled. A similar plugin is MobilePress.
5. Opera mini Simulator
While the majority of mobile users will use the Safari browser, some devices also allow the opera mini browser. This tool simulates how opera mini displays on mobile devices.
While not specific for mobile devices I also recently came across Vischeck, a free tool which will show you how your website looks for those visitors that are colour-blind – very nifty.
Do you have suggestions of other tools that will help to make a website more mobile-friendly? If so, feel free to share them below.
