4 Tips to Get Quality Backlinks

Posted by @ 9:56 pm

Linking is a big part of any search engine marketing campaign, but website owners need to ensure they are building quality over quantity when it comes to backlinks.

Why? Poor quality backlinks will generally offer little benefit to a sites ranking and in some cases can actually harm it. Participation in free-for-all link farms and other link spamming techniques are easily recognized by modern search engine spiders, which will penalize any websites participating in them.

So how can website owners build quality backlinks for their website? Here are a few tips to get you started:

Submit Your Site to Directories
Submitting your website to directories remains one of the oldest and most effective ways to generate backlinks. There are thousands of online directories ranging from the largest (such as DMOZ and Yahoo! Directory) to a wide range of specific niche directories. To measure the quality of these directories, look at the PageRank of the categories you intend to submit to as well as the quality of websites included in the directory. Use your common sense here and if the directory looks to be providing genuine value, submit your website.

Press Releases
Create a press release about newsworthy events and submit them online. There are a range of options here (both paid and free) but generally the paid services provide the widest reach. Press releases that contain your company URL get picked up by a variety of online publishers and can help to provide topical inbound links to your site.

Build Links from Relevant Websites
This method requires you to contact other relevant websites and ask for them to link to your site. These types of links can be established over time and can take a while to develop. The best way is to try and build a mutually beneficial relationship with other websites and if required, provide a link back to their site also.

Create Interesting Content
This is the most natural way to build links over time but does require commitment and effort on your part. Creating unique and interesting content provides the opportunity for other websites to link to you because they see genuine value in the information you provide. Writing background information and commenting on industry trends are a great way to try and build this content.

These tips are just some of the many ways you can go about acquiring backlinks for your site. The safest way is to build these links over time, as a sudden increase in incoming links for any website can set off alarm bells in search engine spiders.
