Where is Search Heading? Google’s Predictions for 2010 and Beyond!

Posted by @ 9:40 pm

As the end of 2009 draws to a close, everyone starts sharing their predictions for the year ahead. So to get the ball rolling, Google’s Matt Cutts has weighed in with his predictions for search over the next 3 years.

In true Matt Cutt’s style, he has used video to provide his insights to a viewer’s question. You can watch Matt’s response below.

To summarize Matt’s predictions for the future,

Google will continue to seek new data sources to make searchable. Beyond web content, Google will look to grow its content inventory through the cloud such as Gmail, calendars, etc

The quest to refine search relevance and accuracy will continue with significant improvements in understanding queries. The context and meaning behind words in a search query via semantic and statistical processing. Think synonyms, morphology and other variables in the search equation.

Cloud computing will grow rapidly. People are already more comfortable using cloud based apps such as Gmail for daily usage. Data migration from the hard drive to the cloud will make it easier and better to search and drive greater content in the Google index.

And as every expert is likely to predict, Matt also believe’s mobile will be a significant part of the next few years. The scale of mobile computing be that smart phones or other handheld devices is phenomenal, and will be a key driver behind search innovation.

What does this mean for business owners and search engine marketers?

The key takeaway is that search is extending beyond just web content in the tradition sense (e.g. web pages, PDFs etc). People need to constantly look at how to optimize ALL their content in terms of search.

Everything that gets published, discussed and shared on the web should be reviewed from an SEO viewpoint.

Matt concedes that Search is “nowhere near done” and as Google continues to find new search solutions, “people ask harder and harder questions”. So the driver behind the future will continue to be our thirst for information in new and engaging ways.
