“Definitive cloaking video” is the name of the 9 minute video Google’s Matt Cutts did recently on the topic of (you guessed it) cloaking and how internet users can determine if a website is using cloaking tactics.
Put simply, cloaking is the misinterpretation of content to searchers, than what is shown to the search engines. It is often used for deceptive purposes by rogue SEO’s and Matt emphasizes that this practice could lead you from getting banned from Google’s index.
The general rule is that there should be no difference between the pages users see than that the Google bot sees (Matt says “white hat cloaking” doesn’t exist). However, some experts have seen that as websites move from being flash to dynamically driven, content can be misread by the crawlers & websites can be penalized even though the web masters have no intention of cloaking. Just as Google developed methods to crawl Flash and PDFs, it is time now for them to do some lifting and develop a way to better filter through the problems of dynamic content.
Here is the video should you want some more information of what to avoid when it comes to cloaking.
When it comes to geo-location and mobile, Matt basically says “don’t worry”.
Matt goes into a lot more details in the video, it is perhaps one of the most comprehensive video’s I have seen him present recently. I highly recommend you watching it if you have any concerns about cloaking.
