The 2012 Cyber Monday Wash-up

Cyber Monday shopping is well and truly over, so how did the online retailers fair?

It’s good news for retailers with more people than ever going online on Monday 26th November to purchase Christmas gifts at heavily discounted prices.

Here’s a rundown of the official stats:

  • According to IBM, Cyber Monday sales were up 30.3% from 2011.
  • Online sales on Cyber Monday topped 1,465 million dollars
  • Customers bought more items per order this year but had a lower Average Order Value than in 2011
  • Mobile sales accounted for close to 13% of sales, an increase of 96% from last year
  • The iPad drove more online sales than any other mobile device with usage up 118%.
  • Facebook referral traffic was down almost 14% and Twitter didn’t even show up to the party this year.
  • 2.6% of people used their Amazon Kindle to shop and 0.6% used their Barnes and Noble Nook
  • According to Monetate, tablet conversion rates exceeded conversion rates on the traditional web for the first time on Cyber Monday (5.84% to 5.51%). In 2011, the numbers were 5.48% (tablets) and 5.98% (traditional web).
  • Total mobile traffic (smartphones and tablets) exceeded 21% of overall web traffic on peak days during the Thanksgiving – Cyber Monday period
  • During the day, only 10.58% of Cyber Monday web traffic came from mobile, but in the evening this rose to 18.18%
  • According to ComScore, sales of video games and accessories were up but only by 18%. Computers and Electronics did better with a 22% and 24% lift. The big winner? Digital Content and Subscriptions up 28%.
  • Employers will be unhappy to note that 47.1% Cyber Monday spending was done from work with an almost equal amount (47.2%) happening at home.

What’s interesting though is that according to ConsumerReport.org, up to 36% of Americans have yet to start their holiday shopping. Considering Christmas is only 14 sleeps away, this is a statistic that truly surprised me.

So just because Cyber Monday has been and gone, don’t think that people wont still be looking for a bargain online. Perhaps some guaranteed visitors to your site is just what you need.
