Around this time each year, many people have their vehicle serviced to ensure its running smoothly for the year ahead. This reminded me that now is also a good time to give you website a quick once-over to make sure there are no issues going into 2009!
Below I’ve shared my top 5 tips to launch your site into the New Year!
1. Update Title and Description Tags
Have a look at how your site is displayed in results across Google, Yahoo! and MSN. Is there prices or product features that need updating? Get these descriptions ready and accurate for 2009. Alternatively, you can try some of the different title tag strategies I mentioned a few weeks ago.
2. Don’t Forget Images!
Like your description and title tags, ensure your images are also labeled correctly. Use descriptive keywords in your filename, alt text and also text surrounding the image. Google’s recently updated image search filtering options mean this could be a strong way to generate traffic in the New Year.
3. Update Any Date Specific Text
If you have any text on your site that is date specific (for example copyright dates, privacy policies etc) ensure that this text is updated for the New Year.
4. Ensure All Your Links Are Valid
Use a tool like Xenu Link Sleuth and ensure there are no broken links across your site. You can also use this tool to check all your redirects are working and be sure your link text is still accurate.
5. Review Your Sitelinks
If your site is lucky enough to have sitelinks, check these links to make sure they are fully functional and focused on your key products for 2009. By using Google’s webmaster tools, you can remove any sitelinks that are no longer valid.
