Hitwise UK has released new data which confirms the value of building a strong facebook presence for your business. According to their research, each new fan acquired on facebook is worth an additional 20 visitors to your website over the course of a year!
To gather this data, the UK study looked at data from the top 100 retailers from their “shopping and classifieds” category and benchmarked this against the number of fans those brands had on their facebook page. The end result was that 1 fan = 20 extra website visits.
The study also looked at the likelihood of users to search for a brand after a visit to facebook. The study found that UK brand Topshop lead the pack with customers being 54% more likely to search for the topshop brand after a visit to facebook, compared with Google, Yahoo or Bing.
Other retailers also saw similar search patterns with the Index column showing the likelihood of searching for the brand after visiting facebook.
This data is good news for business owners as it helps to put a value on the effort involved with marketing and maintaining a business presence on facebook.

This metric (20 visits extra per fan) could somewhat show the viral nature of facebook. I don’t know if google +1 achieve the same type of results.
