Google Press Day 2006 has come and gone, and the one release that has everyone talking is Google Notebook. So what is Google Notebook?
The due to be released service is the latest offering from Google Labs, the source of all Google’s beta projects. Touted by industry folk as Google’s entry into the world of social bookmarking, Google Notebook goes beyond the standard bookmarking resources that are currently available such as Del.icio.us and alike.
Social bookmarking? These services allow users to save their favorite websites and internet resources in an online location that can be accessed from anywhere at anytime as long as you have access to the web.
Furthermore, you can choose to publish your favorites for others to view and vice versa, search through fellow bookmarkers favorites. As most services offer keyword tagging facilities, search results are thought to be more relevant, as peer opinion is believed to better qualify results than existing search engine algorithms.
Google Notebook, will not only allow you to save your favorites and tag them with relevant terms, but also capture information from the web, jot down notes which are saved for future reference, and search through other users notes (if shared).
This makes Google Notebook not only a competitor to the many bookmarking sites available, but also a threat to the many notation software offerings on the market, including Microsoft OneNote and Onfolio which Microsoft has recently acquired.
Google’s mission is “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful”, so Google Notebook is a logical extension beyond basic search for the company in achieving this goal. It’s a case of find it, collect it, store it, organize it and share it!
In a strategic leak of pre-release screenshots via Google employee Erica Joy, Google has made its intentions clear and given fair warning to all its competitors. Formal release of Google Notebook is due this week, so lookout for our review in the coming week.
