Good news for webmasters – Bing has finally published its first set of guidelines for webmasters using their services. These guidelines are expected to offer webmasters general guidance related to SEO practices specifically for the Bing search engine.
The newly introduced Bing Webmaster Guidelines are expected to cover subjects like social media and links and additional coverage on search engine optimization and other technical website topics. As an example, Bing names a few different ‘tips’ for webmasters to take note of when setting up a website within the Avoid section. These topics include avoiding using duplicate content, like and link schemes, cloaking and meta refresh redirects—a myriad of ‘black-hat’ SEO tricks. In contrast, the SEO or search engine optimization category details SEO as a ‘valid practice’ to help improve and make a website more relevant. Users should expect to view a host of valid ‘white-hat’ SEO tricks.
However, experts are warning webmasters not to expect the type of in-depth guidelines that Google provides. Bing isn’t looking to host extensive answers to questions within the current set of guidelines, instead targeting to present a clean and easy to understand set of website guidelines. According to the official announcement from Bing:
Changes should be infrequent as these current Webmaster Guidelines cover most major topics. They are not exhaustive and you should not expect to find deep, technical answers in them. They are intended to help most business owners understand the broad strokes of search marketing.
I guess it’s a start!
For users who desire more detailed information relating to search marketing/SEO, Bing hosts more information within their Webmaster FAQ document, assessable in PDF form from the Bing Webmaster Tools web page. Bing also provides more resources via their Webmaster Forums and Webmasters Tools Help and How-To area. Plus, they have just announced 6 free Webmaster webinars between mid November and February overing topics like SEO 101, Crawling Basics and Authority Building.
Bing’s new Webmaster Guidelines can be found under ‘Help’ section of their Webmaster Tools suite. It’s listed as a new entry located within the Content Guidelines area.
