If Google Fails – Where Do You Go?

With Google being the first choice for the large majority of us, where do you go when Google fails to deliver the answers you need? According to research from online ad network Chitika, almost 80% of users visit Yahoo or Ask.com, leaving Bing to claim third spot with only 16.4% of visitors.

The full breakdown can be seen below:

Chitika’s methodology for collecting this data involved looking at 39,233 individual users who searched for the same keyword (exact matched) on more than one search engine, and then creating a time-based matrix of first- and second-searches.

As you might have guessed, the most surprising find from this research is large amount of people using Ask.com over Bing, which usually finishes third after Google and Yahoo! in search engine rankings.

One reason for the skew towards Ask.com may be the extensive advertising Ask does via Google AdWords. As others have noted in the past, Ask.com advertises for a variety of search terms on Google which leads customers to conduct the same search on Ask.com.

An example can be seen below:

This type of advertising would definitely increase the number of people conducting the same searches on Google and Ask and may have impacted the results of this study.

I’d be interested to hear what you have to say, so let me know via the comments below which search engine you use after Google. My personal choice is always Bing, followed by Yahoo if I still can’t find what I’m after.
