Google Sets Fall Launch of Social Network ‘Google Me’

Rumors that Google is building a Facebook contender have become slightly more convincing due to Google’s Eric Schmidt confirming the launch of the social application ‘Google Me’ into their products including email, online search, videos and maps.

The announcement of this launch (in fall this year) comes at a very important time. With Facebook having suffered bad PR from recent privacy issues, could Google Me become a great concern for Facebook?

When Google acquired social media developer, Angstro in August it sparked rumors that Google had all intention of challenging Facebook. Now it looks like that this rumor has become reality.

Google wants Google Me to not just be another addition to the product catalogue but will aim at combining all their previous ‘not so successful’ social networking attempts – like Orkut, Buzz and Profiles – into a successful social network.

“We’re trying to take Google’s core products and add a social component,” Google CEO Eric Schmidt said at the Google Zeitgeist conference recently. “If you think about it, it’s obvious. With your permission, knowing more about who your friends are, we can provide more tailored recommendations. Search quality can get better.”

A big question still remains: how can Google get 500+ million Facebook devotees to abandon Facebook and turn to Google Me instead?

When you at the hype surround Google’s last (failed) attempt into social networking, Google Buzz, I don’t expect to see a mass exodus from Facebook anytime soon.

It’ll be interesting to see how Google plans to make its services more social without making the same mistakes again.

Who thinks “Google Me” will do well? I don’t think it has a chance against FB.

You misunderstand. Google doesn’t have to get 500+ million people to ‘abandon Facebook.’ Its product will work *with* all the other sites you are using. Google does not want, has never wanted, a walled garden. Going *through* Google to get to other sites has been the key to the company’s success.

Signs are that, whatever Google is working on, it will show you all the friends, news, and information you have on order at Facebook… without your actually having to visit Mark Zuckerberg’s site to get it. The new social network is finding all the friends you have and all the news you want to share using any tool you feel like using. The walls will drop from around Zuckerberg’s garden.

It’s misrepresenting things in the extreme to call all those people at Facebook ‘devotees.’ Many pages are ghost towns. Many belong to people who don’t exist. Many more belong to people who are primed and ready for a viable alternative so they can jump ship. How many of them do you think will stay if Facebook can no longer hold their contacts and information hostage?

The Internet is littered with the graves of sites ‘everyone’ was once on.
