Is Google going to add your phone number to your AdWords ad? Certainly looks that way!
Over at the Search Engine Land blog, Barry Schwartz discovered (with the help of a reader) that Google is testing phone numbers in AdWords ads.
Below is a screen shot of the ad in question.
With no click-to-call functionality attached it simply appears that Google have added the number on their own accord.
Google confirmed that they are indeed testing this feature. A Google spokesperson told Barry the following:
We’re currently testing a feature with a small number of advertisers in which a phone number can be included within the ad to help them more effectively engage with customers who prefer to connect over the phone.
This is great news for businesses with AdWords campaigns as it should increase their phone call conversions especially from people who use their iphone to search. However, it is an interesting move by Google; I would have thought that including a phone number in the ad would reduce the number of searchers that click on the ad, therefore reducing the amount of money they receive from the click through the pay-per-click system.
