Google Adds Google+ Share Button to Search Results

Posted by @ 4:58 pm

Google just keeps the new developments coming! Quite recently, Google has been experimenting with a new Google+ “Share” button that appears in the location once occupied by the +1 button for search results. This new button enables Google+ users to comment on and share website links with their contacts and friends who also have Google+.

Share for Google+ was first introduced back in April. At that point, third-party website owners could choose to add the button to their websites. Google explained that the Share button was a good option for items that users may wish to share with the public or with those within their circles that they may not wish to endorse by clicking the +1 button. For example, controversial news items that are worth paying attention to but not worthy of an endorsement may be good candidates for the Share button.

With the new Google+ Share button, users have the option of sharing website links to the public, or sharing them in private to those who are in their Circles. This new development indicates Google’s continued dedication to increasing the ties between Google searches and social networking networks and platforms. It remains to be seen whether this is just an experiment or whether it will be a permanent feature.

Here is a screenshot of how the new button looks and works in the Google SERP’s:

The new Google+ Share button is being rolled out as we speak, but there is no firm data on how rapidly it will be rolled out to users across the globe. Some U.K. users reported sightings of the Share button and some have even gone so far as to post screen shots evidencing the authenticity of their sighting.

The relationship between the Google Plus +1 feature and the new Share button is much like the relationship between Facebook’s ‘Like’ feature and ‘Share’ feature. If a user wishes to mark an item on Facebook as noteworthy, he or she may ‘share’ the content. If a user enjoys content, they may ‘like’ the item. Now Google+ users can have the same degree of freedom to share content, while reserving their +1s for the content that they like the most.

Seems kind of backwards.. Why would you recommend a page if you haven’t read it yet?
