As search pushes deeper into the mobile arena, a rumored partnership between Google and the world’s no. 1 cell phone manufacturer, Nokia, is sure make things interesting.
Google is supposedly teaming up with Nokia to offer GoogleTalk on Nokia’s 770 wireless tablets. This synergy between two of the world’s most recognizable technology brands will provide users with free phone calls courtesy of the Google Talk’s VoIP (voice over the internet protocol) functionality.
Why make calls over the internet when I have a Nokia product in my hands?
Well, firstly the Nokia 770 is actually a mobile device designed to access the internet like a PC. Considering it doesn’t have an in-built cell phone connection (a Bluetooth plug-in is available), it’s more of a portable computer than a phone. What it does have is Wi-Fi capabilities which are where the Google partnership becomes relevant.
Wi-Fi networks offer much faster internet connections than traditional cell phone networks. The speed of Wi-Fi networks allows services such as VoIP and instant messaging to be used in a viable manner.
The partnership means that the new Nokia 770 will have Google Talk pre-installed. This provides cost effective telephony for Nokia owners and also opens up Google’s services to a large tech-savvy market.
While, the Nokia 770 is capable of downloading other software, meaning other free VoIP and messaging services could be used, Tuesday’s announcement will confirm whether the partnership means restrictions will be imposed on the Tablet to maintain any exclusive arrangement with Google.
This partnership will have existing mobile network carriers watching their call revenues closely, especially considering Google’s very public plans to Wi-Fi the world. It does reinforce recent comments from Google CEO Eric Schmidt, regarding their plans to forge into the Internet-telephony arena. A formal announcement is planned for Tuesday, so stay tuned to find out exactly what this Nokia - Google deal will offer.
